At that point,Grahamscrambled, playing more than 120 live gigs a year and sporadically releasing albums. A fixture andlegendintheAustinmusicscene, he was elected to the city'sMusicHall of Fame three times — as a solo act and for his work with the True Believers and The Skunks.

Wednesday's show wasn't intended as a formal tribute toJonDeeGraham, but friends and family acknowledged it would serve as the first in an expected string of concerts and gatherings to honor his many years as one ofAustin'smost respected performers.

My introduction toJonDeecame through my friend Mike June, an outstanding songwriter in his own right, who left North Jersey forAustinto pursue hismusic. He befriendedJonDeewhile gigging around town, eventually landing an opening slot on his house concert tours across the country.

JonDeewas a lifelong Texan. He lived inAustinbut he used to tour every year, and one of the cities he came to regularly was Minneapolis, where I live. Many years ago I saw he would be in town, but only for a private house party. I messaged him -thefirst time I ever reached out-to ask if he would be playing anywhere else in town.

JonDeeGraham,theAustinsinger-songwriter whose work spanned punk and country, died Friday at age 67.
